Archangel Michael
The commander (archistrategos) of the heavenly hosts.
Biography
Michael appears already in the Old Testament as guardian of the people of Israel and chief of the angelic hosts; tradition places him beside Abraham, Joshua and the prophet Elijah, and Christian teaching regards him as foremost among the archangels.
In the Book of Revelation, Michael leads the angels in battle against the dragon and casts him out of heaven, an image that established his veneration as commander of the heavenly hosts in Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The Church keeps 8 November as the Synaxis of Michael, Gabriel and all the Bodiless Powers, honouring the angels' work as God's messengers at decisive moments in sacred history.
