The Prophet Elisha
Disciple and successor of the Prophet Elijah.
Biography
Elisha was the son of the landowner Shaphat from Abel-meholah. According to the Old Testament, Elijah found him ploughing and threw his mantle over him, calling him to become his successor.
When Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elisha received a double portion of his prophetic power and carried on his work, performing many miracles; tradition recounts how he multiplied a widow's oil so she could pay off her debts.
He died in the reign of King Joash and was buried amid great mourning by the people of Israel in Samaria.
