The Prophet Jeremiah
Prophet of the Old Testament.
Biography
Jeremiah was born around 650 BC in Anathoth, near Jerusalem, the son of the priest Hilkiah. At about 23 to 25 years old he was called by God to the office of prophet and, despite his initial hesitation because of his youth, he obeyed.
His ministry, which lasted more than fifty years, spanned the reigns of several kings of Judah up to the fall of Jerusalem and the exile to Babylon. He fought against idolatry and false prophets, warning of the coming destruction. Tradition credits him with the book that bears his name and with the Book of Lamentations.
