Prophet Nahum
One of the twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament, called the Elkoshite, whose book foretells the fall of Nineveh.
Biography
Nahum is one of the twelve Minor Prophets of the Old Testament. Church tradition holds that he came from Elkosh, hence his title 'the Elkoshite', and places him in the 5th century BC, while modern scholars tend to date him earlier, around the 7th century BC.
His short, three-chapter book foretells the destruction of Nineveh, capital of the Assyrian Empire, which he describes as a 'city of blood' full of lies and injustice, while also praising God as a refuge for those who revere him in times of distress.
According to tradition, Nahum died in peace and was buried in the land of his fathers.
