Saint Abercius of Hierapolis, Equal-to-the-Apostles
Second-century bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia who, according to tradition, preached the Gospel in Syria, Mesopotamia and Asia Minor and was therefore called Equal-to-the-Apostles.
Biography
Abercius lived at the end of the 2nd century and, on account of his blameless life and teaching, was urged by his flock to become bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia.
He remained humble in his office, holding that honour should come with greater service. According to tradition he worked miracles — even healing the daughter of a Roman emperor from a demon — and preached the Gospel in cities of Syria, Mesopotamia, Lycaonia, Pisidia and Phrygia, for which he was called Equal-to-the-Apostles.
He died peacefully at the age of 72.
