Saint Agatha

Martyr from Sicily.

Biography

Agatha came from a wealthy family in Catania or Palermo in Sicily and was left an orphan and sole heir at the age of fifteen. She gave her wealth to charity, having dedicated her life to Christ.

According to tradition, the prefect Quintianus wanted to marry her and, when she refused, had her cruelly tortured to force her to renounce her faith. Agatha endured the torment giving praise to God.

She died in prison in 251, during the persecution of Decius, and her relics were later transferred to Constantinople.
