Saint Agatho, Pope of Rome

Pope of Rome who supported the condemnation of Monothelitism at the Sixth Ecumenical Council.

Biography

Agatho came from Palermo in Sicily and became the seventy-ninth pope of Rome in 678. He sent legates to the Sixth Ecumenical Council, which met in Constantinople in 680 to condemn the heresy of Monothelitism.

Through his firm stand he helped secure the condemnation of monothelite views held even by some of his predecessors as pope. He died in old age around 681 and is said to have been the longest-lived pope in history.
