3rd–4th century
Saint Agathonicus of Nicomedia
Martyr from Nicomedia who was put to the sword together with other Christians during the persecution of Maximian.
Biography
Agathonicus came from Nicomedia and taught the Christian faith, at a time when, under the persecution of Maximian, the count Eutolmius was hunting down Christians in Pontus and Thrace.
At Carpe, Eutolmius put to death Zoticus and his disciples, and when he learned that the local prince had become a Christian through Agathonicus, he arrested them both, together with other Christians, and marched them bound toward Thrace, where the emperor was staying.
Along the way several of their companions died from exhaustion or were killed because their wounded feet could no longer carry them. At the village of Ammous near Selymbria, Agathonicus, the prince and the rest were beheaded by imperial order.
