Saint Aldhelm
Abbot of Malmesbury, first bishop of Sherborne, and a renowned scholar of Latin poetry in Anglo-Saxon England.
Biography
Aldhelm was born around 639 in England, possibly of a family linked to the royal house of Wessex. He became abbot of Malmesbury Abbey and was known as a scholar and writer of Latin poetry.
In 705 he was elected the first bishop of Sherborne, a post he held until his death. After he died in 709 he was venerated as a saint, his feast falling on the same day as his death.
