Biography
Amphilochius was a Cappadocian, a friend and contemporary of Basil the Great, notable for his learning and piety. In 374 he became bishop of Iconium.
His moral authority extended beyond his own see, as he mediated in neighbouring churches to safeguard peace and sound teaching. Basil the Great held him in high regard, as their correspondence shows, and he took part in the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople in 381.
He wrote several works in defence of Orthodoxy and died peacefully in 394.
