Saint Anatolius, Patriarch of Constantinople

Patriarch of Constantinople (449–458), a native of Alexandria, in whose time the Fourth Ecumenical Council met at Chalcedon (451).

Biography

Anatolius came from Alexandria and had been ordained deacon by Archbishop Cyril. He became Patriarch of Constantinople on 11 August 449, two months after the unjust death of his predecessor Flavian; the heretical Patriarch of Alexandria, Dioscorus, backed his election hoping to control him, but Anatolius proved a firm defender of Orthodoxy.

During his time the Fourth Ecumenical Council met at Chalcedon in 451, condemning the heresy of Eutyches and deposing Dioscorus. The relics of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste were also brought to Constantinople in this period.

He died in July 458.
