Saint Andrew the Apostle, the First-Called

The first disciple called by Christ, patron saint of Patras.

Biography

Andrew was a fisherman from Bethsaida and the brother of the Apostle Peter. He is called the First-Called because, according to the Gospel of John, he was the first to follow Christ.

Tradition holds that he preached in Greece and was crucified at Patras, whose patron saint he is. His head relic was returned to Patras from Rome in 1964.
