Saint Anthony the Great

Egyptian hermit regarded as the father of monasticism.

Biography

Anthony (c. 251–356) was born in Egypt. He gave away his property and withdrew into the desert, where he lived as an ascetic for decades.

Disciples gathered around him, and he is therefore regarded as the father of monasticism. His Life was written by Athanasius of Alexandria and did much to spread the monastic ideal.
