Saint Antipas the Hieromartyr, Bishop of Pergamon
Bishop of Pergamon, called a 'faithful martyr' in the Book of Revelation, who according to tradition was martyred under Domitian.
Biography
Antipas was a contemporary of the Apostles, who ordained him bishop of Pergamon while John the Theologian was in exile on Patmos; the Book of Revelation calls him a "faithful martyr" (Rev. 2:13). By then an old man, he was arrested by pagans and brought before the governor, who argued that the antiquity of paganism made it superior to Christianity.
Antipas answered with the example of Cain, who despite his antiquity inspires only revulsion. Enraged, the governor had him shut inside a red-hot bronze effigy of a bull, where he died in AD 92. His relics were buried at Pergamon, and healings are attributed to them.
