Saint Argyri the New Martyr

New martyr from Prousa who, after a false accusation, was imprisoned in Constantinople and died in prison in the early 18th century without renouncing her faith.

Biography

Argyri was born in Prousa in 1688. While newly married, a Turkish man who desired her, unable to have her, falsely accused her of wanting to convert to Islam, and the judge of Prousa had her imprisoned.

Her Christian husband managed to get her trial moved to Constantinople, but the same man repeated his false accusation there. Argyri courageously confessed her faith in Christ and was thrown into the prison of Haskioy.

She died there after years of torment, in 1721; the Church celebrates the translation of her relics on 30 April.
