Saint Athanasius the Great
Archbishop of Alexandria and defender of the faith of the First Ecumenical Council.
Biography
Athanasius (c. 296–373) attended the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea (325) as a deacon and shortly afterwards became archbishop of Alexandria.
He defended the Nicene Creed against Arianism and was exiled five times as a result. Among his writings is the Life of Anthony the Great.
He is commemorated on 18 January together with Saint Cyril of Alexandria, and on 2 May, the translation of his relics.
