Saint Calliope
Martyr of the early Christian centuries.
Biography
Calliope lived in the mid-3rd century, in the time of Emperor Decius. According to tradition she was known for her beauty but refused every proposal of marriage, having devoted her life to Christ and to caring for the sick.
During the persecution of Decius she was arrested and brought before a local ruler, who tried in vain to persuade her to deny her faith. She was scourged, tortured with knives and fire, and finally beheaded.
