Saint Chrysi the New Martyr

New martyr from Moglena, martyred in 1795.

Biography

Chrysi was born in the village of Slatena (today called Chrysi) in Almopia, in the region of Pella, the daughter of a poor father with four daughters. According to tradition, while gathering firewood in the fields with other women, she was abducted by a Turk who tried to persuade her to convert to Islam and marry him.

Chrysi steadfastly refused, despite pressure even from her own family, declaring that she would not deny her faith. Faced with her refusal, her captors resorted to torture and, on 13 October 1795, put her to death by cutting her body with knives.
