Holy Martyr Danax the Reader
A reader of the church of Avlona in Illyricum who, according to tradition, rescued the sacred vessels from the pagans and was beheaded for refusing to sacrifice to Dionysus.
Biography
Danax was a reader at the church of Avlona in Illyricum. When pagans stormed the church, he took the sacred vessels and treasures and hid them in a fortified place five miles outside the city, toward the sea, so they would not be desecrated.
The pagans captured him and tried to force him to sacrifice to the god Dionysus. Because he remained steadfast in his faith, they beheaded him and threw his body into the sea.
