Saint Daniel of Pereyaslavl

A Russian monk who devoted his life to caring for the poor and burying the unclaimed dead.

Biography

Daniel (born Demetrius) was born around 1460 in Pereyaslavl, Russia, and was introduced early to monastic life, becoming a monk at the monastery of Saint Paphnutius of Borovsk under the spiritual guidance of Leukios of Volokolamsk, who is commemorated on the same day.

Returning to his birthplace, he devoted himself to caring for the poor and burying the unclaimed dead he found left unburied, and founded a monastery near the town cemetery for this work. He died in peace in 1540, and the Church also commemorates him on two further dates.
