5th century
Saint Daniel the Stylite
A monk blessed by Symeon the Stylite who spent decades atop a pillar near Constantinople in the fifth century.
Biography
Daniel was born in 410 in the village of Maratha, near Samosata, to devout but childless parents who dedicated him to God's service. He became a monk, and on a journey with his abbot he met Symeon the Stylite and received his blessing.
After his abbot's death he went to Constantinople, as Symeon had advised, and eventually built his own pillar, where he lived an ascetic life for the following decades. He received the gift of foresight, worked many miracles, and took part in the Council of Chalcedon, dying at the age of eighty.
