Saint Ephraim the Great Martyr and Wonderworker
Monk of the Monastery of the Annunciation on Mount Amomon in Attica, martyred by the Turks in 1426; his relics were found in 1950 and are kept at the monastery in Nea Makri.
Biography
Ephraim, born Konstantinos Morphes, was born in Trikala in 1384 and became a monk at the Monastery of the Annunciation on Mount Amomon in Attica. In 1424 Ottoman raiders killed the monastery's monks while he himself was away praying in a nearby cave.
The following year he too was captured and tortured to death, on 5 May 1426. His existence remained unknown for centuries until, in 1950, according to tradition, he was revealed in visions to a nun, an event that led to the discovery of his relics; the Church formally added him to its calendar of saints in 2011.
