5th century
Venerable Eusebius the Hermit (of Asikha)
A 5th-century Syrian ascetic who lived in a roofless stone enclosure on a mountain near Asikha and died at the age of ninety in a nearby monastery.
Biography
Eusebius lived in the 5th century and, out of love for God, took up monastic life. He first became a monk at a monastery and then withdrew to a mountain near the town of Asikha, where he lived an ascetic life inside a roofless stone enclosure, fasting so strictly that his body was reduced to skin and bone.
His reputation for holiness drew many people seeking his blessing; to preserve his stillness, he moved to a nearby monastery, where he continued his life of prayer and asceticism until he died in peace at the age of ninety.
