Saint Eustathius of Antioch

Archbishop of Antioch and a leading figure at the First Ecumenical Council, exiled by the Arians for his Orthodoxy.

Biography

Eustathius was born in 260, probably at Side in Pamphylia, and became one of the leading churchmen of his day for his firmness in the Orthodox faith. As bishop of Beroea in Syria he took part in the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in 325 and soon after became archbishop of Antioch.

In 330 the Arians, wanting him removed, slandered him with false charges through a bribed woman and secured his exile to Trajanopolis in Thrace, where he died in 360. Years later he was vindicated, his relics were moved to Antioch, and John Chrysostom delivered a eulogy in his honor.
