Saint George the Great Martyr
Great martyr, a soldier martyred under Diocletian.
Biography
According to tradition, George came from Cappadocia and was an officer in the Roman army. He was martyred at Nicomedia under the emperor Diocletian in the early fourth century.
He is one of the most popular saints of the Orthodox Church. Icons show him on horseback slaying a dragon, and he is known as the Trophy-bearer (Tropaioforos).
His feast is on 23 April. When that date falls before Easter or on Easter Sunday itself, the feast is moved to Easter Monday.
