Saint Glyceria

Martyr of Trajanopolis.

Biography

Glyceria was born in Trajanopolis in the 2nd century, in the time of Emperor Antoninus Pius, daughter of the former consul Macarius. She embraced Christianity early and taught the faith to others.

Summoned before the governor Sabinus, she openly professed her faith and, according to tradition, shattered the statue of Zeus in a pagan temple through prayer. She was tortured, imprisoned - where she converted her jailer Laodicius - and finally thrown to wild beasts.

She died a few days later from a wound inflicted by one of the animals. Bishop Domitius of Heraclea took charge of her relics.
