Saint Ignatius the God-bearer
Bishop of Antioch martyred in Rome in the early second century; several of his letters survive.
Biography
Ignatius was bishop of Antioch at the end of the first century and, according to tradition, a disciple of the Apostles.
Under Trajan he was taken in chains to Rome and thrown to the beasts (around 107). On the way he wrote seven letters to churches, which survive and are a precious witness to the early Church.
