4th century
Holy Martyr Julian of Cilicia (of Anazarbus)
A martyr from Cilicia who, according to tradition, was sewn into a sack and cast into the sea during Diocletian's persecution; he is probably the same as the martyr Julian commemorated on 21 June.
Biography
Julian belonged to a senatorial family of Cilicia and was martyred during Diocletian's persecution, in the early 4th century. According to tradition, he was tortured for a whole year, paraded from city to city, and finally sewn into a sack with scorpions and snakes and cast into the sea.
His body was carried by the water to Alexandria, where it was buried, before his relics were later moved to Antioch, where John Chrysostom delivered a homily in his honour. Saint.gr notes that this is probably the same saint also commemorated on 21 June.
