Saint Leo the Great, Pope of Rome
Pope of Rome (440–461) whose doctrinal letter was read at the Fourth Ecumenical Council in Chalcedon.
Biography
Leo was born in Rome around 400. He served as a deacon before being unanimously elected Pope of Rome in 440, succeeding Sixtus III.
In 451 his letter to the Council of Chalcedon, known as the "Tome of Leo", set out the two natures of Christ and became the basis of the council's final definitions.
In 452, tradition says, he met Attila the Hun and persuaded him to withdraw his army from Italy. He left a rich body of sermons and letters and died in 461.
