c. 240–312
Saint Lucian of Antioch, Hieromartyr
Presbyter and theologian of Antioch, a native of Samosata known for his revision of the biblical text, who died a martyr in prison at Nicomedia in 312.
Biography
Lucian came from Samosata in Syria. Orphaned at twelve, he gave away his inheritance to the poor and devoted himself to the study of Scripture; knowing Hebrew, he revised the Greek translations of the Old Testament against the original text and donated his work to the church of Nicomedia.
He was ordained a priest in Antioch, where he founded a school and preached with such zeal that he encouraged the faithful toward martyrdom. When he learned of Diocletian's persecution of the Christians of Nicomedia, he went there to support them, but was arrested and imprisoned; the Synaxarion says he died of starvation in prison, while other sources say he was beheaded, around the year 312.
