Saint Macarius of Corinth

Archbishop of Corinth who, together with Saint Nicodemos the Hagiorite, compiled and published the Philokalia.

Biography

Macarius (born Michael Notaras) was born in 1731 in Trikala of Corinth to a noble family. He taught the young of Corinth without pay and, after the local bishop's death, was elected, while still a layman, to the episcopal throne of Corinth in 1764.

The Russo-Turkish War forced him to leave his diocese, and he eventually devoted himself to study and writing, travelling to Chios and Mount Athos, where he worked with Saint Nicodemos the Hagiorite. Together they compiled and published the 'Philokalia,' one of the most important collections of ascetic texts in the Orthodox Church.
