Saint Mark the Evangelist
Author of the Gospel of Mark and, according to tradition, founder of the Church of Alexandria.
Biography
Tradition identifies Mark the Evangelist with the John Mark of Acts, a companion of the Apostles Peter and Paul. The Gospel of Mark is attributed to him.
According to tradition he founded the Church of Alexandria and was martyred there. In 828 relics of his were taken to Venice, where Saint Mark's Basilica was built.
