Saint Maximus the Hut-Burner

An ascetic of Mount Athos who burned down his own hut to remain free of any possession.

Biography

Maximus (born Manuel) was born in Lampsacus and became a monk on Mount Ganos before settling at the Great Lavra on Mount Athos.

Because he moved so often, he would burn down his hut each time to practise complete non-possession, which earned him the name Hut-Burner; he died peacefully in 1365, at the age of ninety-five. He is counted among the great ascetics of Athos in his era.
