3rd–4th century
Saint Methodius the Hieromartyr, Bishop of Patara
Bishop in Lycia and church writer, known for his works against the teachings of Origen, who according to tradition was martyred in the early 4th century.
Biography
Methodius served as a bishop in Lycia — tradition connects him with Patara, while other sources call him bishop of Olympus and later of Tyre — and was a philosopher and church writer, best known for his work "The Symposium of the Ten Virgins, or On Chastity".
He campaigned systematically against the teachings of Origen, which, according to one tradition, led to his death at the hands of a servant sent against him by followers of Origen. Most scholars, however, place his martyrdom at Chalcis, during the persecution under Diocletian in the early 4th century.
