Saint Nestor of Thessaloniki

Young disciple of Saint Demetrius in Thessaloniki.

Biography

Nestor was a young acquaintance of Saint Demetrius in Thessaloniki, about twenty years old. Seeing the emperor delighting in the victories of a powerful gladiator named Lyaeus, who mistreated Christians in the arena, he asked the imprisoned Demetrius for his blessing to face him.

With that blessing, he entered the arena and, calling on the God of Demetrius, defeated and killed Lyaeus in single combat. The enraged emperor ordered both Nestor and Demetrius put to death with a spear.
