Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite
Athonite monk (1749–1809) from Naxos who compiled the Philokalia with Saint Macarius of Corinth.
Biography
Nicodemus was born on Naxos in 1749 under the secular name Nicholas. He studied in Naxos and Smyrna, and in 1775 went to Mount Athos, where he was tonsured a monk at the Monastery of Dionysiou.
He devoted himself to study and writing, working with Saint Macarius of Corinth on the publication of the Philokalia and the Evergetinos. He also compiled the Pedalion with the hieromonk Agapios and wrote dozens of theological and ascetic books, including the Synaxaristes and the Unseen Warfare.
He died on 14 July 1809 at the age of 60, in his cell at Karyes on Mount Athos, and was canonized in 1955.
