8th–9th century
Saint Niketas the Confessor
Abbot of the Medikion monastery, twice exiled for defending the holy icons.
Biography
Niketas came from Caesarea in Bithynia and was orphaned of his mother as an infant, growing up in the care of his father Philaretos. While still young he went to the Medikion monastery at Triglia, where the brothers, valuing his virtues, elected him abbot under Patriarch Tarasius.
For his firm faith in the holy icons he was exiled twice under Leo V the Armenian, first to Masalea and then to the island of Saint Glykeria. He returned to Constantinople under Michael the Stammerer, where he corresponded with Theodore the Studite, and there he died in peace.
