4th century
Saint Orestes of Tyana
Martyr from Tyana in Cappadocia.
Biography
Orestes came from Tyana in Cappadocia and, according to some sources, was a physician. During the persecution of Diocletian, around 289, the governor Maximus tried every means to force him to renounce Christ, without success.
He was stripped, whipped and imprisoned for seven days; because he remained steadfast in his faith, Maximus ordered a chain fastened through his ankles and tied to a wild horse. The horse was set loose and dragged the saint for twenty kilometers, until he gave up his spirit.
