4th century
Saint Parthenius of Lampsacus
Bishop of Lampsacus on the Hellespont.
Biography
Parthenius came from Bithynia and lived in the time of Constantine the Great. He was the son of the deacon Christopher, who taught him the Orthodox faith, and as a young man he loved fishing on Lake Apollonias, giving to the poor the money he earned selling fish.
He was ordained priest by Philip, bishop of Melitopolis, and later bishop of Lampsacus by Achillius, bishop of Cyzicus. According to tradition, God granted him the gift of casting out demons and healing illnesses, which is why the faithful invoke him especially against cancer.
He was known for his gentleness, patience and hospitality, and died peacefully. Part of his skull is kept at the Makrymalli monastery in the Metropolis of Chalcis.
