Saint Pelagia of Tinos

Nun of the Kechrovouni monastery on Tinos (1752–1834) who, according to tradition, was led by visions to the finding of the icon of Our Lady of Tinos in 1823.

Biography

Pelagia, born Loukia, was born in 1752 in the village of Kambos on Tinos, daughter of the priest Nikiforos Negrepontis. Orphaned of her father, at 15 she entered the Kechrovouni Monastery as a novice and became a nun under her aunt's name, Pelagia.

In 1822, at about 70 years old, she began seeing visions of a haloed lady asking that a buried church be excavated in the field of Doxaras. After three visions she informed Bishop Gabriel of Tinos, and the excavation led, on 30 January 1823, to the discovery of the icon of the Annunciation.

Pelagia died on 28 April 1834 and was buried in the church of the Taxiarchs at the monastery. She was canonized in 1970.
