Saint Philip the Evangelist, One of the Seven

One of the Church's first seven deacons, known from the Acts of the Apostles for his preaching in Samaria and his baptism of Queen Candace's eunuch.

Biography

Philip came from Caesarea in Palestine and was one of the first seven deacons of the Church in Jerusalem (Acts 6). He was married and had four daughters said to be gifted with prophecy.

He preached the Gospel in Samaria, where among others he baptised Simon the magician, and he also baptised the eunuch of Queen Candace whom he met on the road. He then reached Tralles in Asia Minor, where he persuaded almost the whole city to believe in Christ, built a church, and there gave up his spirit.
