Saint Philothei of Athens
Sixteenth-century Athenian nun, patron saint of Athens.
Biography
Philothei came from the Athenian Benizelos family. After she was widowed she became a nun, founded a convent in Athens and cared for the poor and for women in distress.
She died in 1589 from injuries inflicted on her by Ottomans. She is a patron saint of Athens.
