5th century
Saint Proclus of Constantinople
A disciple of John Chrysostom who became Patriarch of Constantinople in the fifth century and arranged for his teacher's relics to be brought home.
Biography
Proclus was a beloved disciple of John Chrysostom and was ordained deacon, then priest, by Patriarch Atticus. In 425 he was made bishop of Cyzicus, but unrest in the province kept him from taking up his post, and he went on preaching in Constantinople instead.
In 434 he ascended the patriarchal throne of Constantinople, where his first concern was to bring his teacher Chrysostom's relics back to the capital. During his patriarchate the Trisagion hymn was also established in the churches. He served as patriarch for twelve years and died in 447.
