Hieromartyr Riginos, Bishop of Skopelos
A bishop of Skopelos, a native of Livadeia, who was martyred in 362 under Julian the Apostate and is honoured as the island's patron saint.
Biography
Riginos was born in Livadeia, Boeotia, in the early 4th century, to devout parents. He was sent by his uncle Achillius, bishop of Larissa, to Skopelos to strengthen the Orthodox faith of exiles held there, and himself became bishop of the island.
According to tradition, he took part in the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 and later in the Council of Serdica in 343, where he opposed Arianism. During the persecutions of Emperor Julian the Apostate he refused to return to paganism and was martyred on Skopelos on 25 February 362. He is venerated as the island's patron saint, where a monastery bears his name.
