334–372
Saint Sabbas the Goth
A Gothic Christian who refused to eat meat sacrificed to idols and was drowned in a river during Athanaric's persecution.
Biography
Sabbas came from the land of the Goths and was a Christian from childhood, refusing to eat meat offered to idols and stopping others from doing so. When the pagans conspired against him, he was first forcibly driven out of his town.
When the Gothic ruler Athanaric began a persecution of Christians, Sabbas was arrested, beaten and bound to a beam, but he would not yield. He was finally tied to a piece of wood and thrown into the river Mousaios, where he died a martyr's death at the age of thirty-eight, in 372.
