Saint Sabbas the Sanctified
Ascetic from Cappadocia (439–532), founder of the Great Lavra near Jerusalem.
Biography
Sabbas was born in 439 in Cappadocia and became a monk as a boy. He settled in Palestine, where in 483 he founded the Great Lavra in the Kidron valley, which is still active.
He organised monastic life in the region, and the liturgical order of his Lavra shaped the Typikon of the Orthodox Church. He died in 532.
