Saint Xenia of Rome

Noblewoman from Rome who lived as an ascetic at Mylasa in Caria.

Biography

Xenia was originally named Eusebia and came from a wealthy family in Rome. To avoid a marriage her parents were imposing on her, she fled in secret with two faithful servants, passed through Kos and settled in Mylasa in Caria, taking the name Xenia.

There she built a church dedicated to the protomartyr Stephen and a women's monastery, where, according to tradition, she was ordained a deaconess by Bishop Paul. Her reputation for a virtuous life drew many women who sought her advice and comfort.

According to tradition, at her burial a cross formed of stars appeared in the sky over the monastery.
