Saint Xenophon

Commemorated with his wife Maria and their sons Arcadius and John.

Biography

Xenophon lived in Constantinople in the time of Emperors Justin I and Justinian. A wealthy senator known for his deep piety, he had two sons, Arcadius and John.

When his sons finished their general schooling, he sent them to Beirut in Phoenicia to study law, but their ship was wrecked. They survived and made their way to Jerusalem, where they became monks.

Xenophon and his wife Maria went looking for their children, found them living as ascetics, and themselves took up the monastic life. Tradition holds that the whole family lived virtuously and was granted the gift of working miracles.
