Saint Zacharias of Corinth

Metropolitan of Corinth martyred in 1684 after refusing to change faith, falsely accused of collaborating with the Venetians.

Biography

Zacharias was metropolitan of Corinth when, during the Venetian commander Morosini's campaign to liberate Greece, the Turks accused him of collaborating with the Venetians. He was arrested, tortured harshly, and brought before a judge who urged him to deny Christ and embrace Islam.

Zacharias refused the proposal with revulsion and was at first sentenced to be burned alive. Thanks to a sum of money offered by the Christians of Corinth, the sentence was commuted, and the new hieromartyr was beheaded in Corinth on 30 March 1684.
