Holy Unmercenaries Cyrus and John

Cyrus, a physician from Alexandria, and John, a soldier from Edessa, who according to tradition healed the sick without payment and were beheaded in Egypt under Diocletian.

Biography

Cyrus, a physician from Alexandria, withdrew as an ascetic to a coastal part of Arabia when Diocletian's persecution broke out. John, a soldier from Edessa, heard of his miracles, sought him out and stayed by his side; their miracles were later recorded by Patriarch Sophronius of Jerusalem, whose own eyes they healed.

When the widow Athanasia was arrested with her three daughters, the two saints hurried to encourage them, and were themselves arrested as a result. All of them were tortured and beheaded together in AD 292.
